Ashes, Dust, and the Sea It stems from spending time on an island and listening to its inhabitants. Through walks, recordings, conversations, and writing workshops, the book explores Madeira through its voices, memories, and connections to the land.

The sea runs through these pages as both distance and passage, a place of departure and the possibility of return. Drawing on personal stories and material gathered from the region, words and memory come together to explore belonging, loneliness, longing, and what remains when someone leaves.

Through the author’s writings and the voices encountered along the way, the island ceases to be merely a geographical location and becomes a way of looking at distance, the other, and the place we call home.
